If you have ever wondered, then you probably have heard or read something about what is Orbit? It is a geometric concept that is the location of the Sun, the location of the planets and other objects in the solar system. The Sun is at the center of our solar system, the other planets are in orbit around it and other objects are further out in the solar system. What is Orbit?
There are three types of orbits. First, all objects in orbit are moving with respect to the mass of their own mass. They are all moving with relative velocity, just like our planet is rotating relative to the Sun. Second, some objects are stationary while others are moving.
An example of an object in orbit around the Sun would be the asteroid belt. Near the asteroid belt, there are objects that are constantly spinning. These objects could be in an elliptical orbit. An object that is in an elliptical orbit would not cause much interference with our space travel and, therefore, we might travel to and from Mars and the Moon using relatively slow down comets. However, these objects, many of which are smaller than the asteroid belt, can cause significant perturbations in our solar system and in other space related objects.
So, now we know what an orbit is and what causes it. But how can we use it to get ourselves from one point to another? Well, it is very simple. We can use the space debris that is in our orbit around the planet to drag ourselves back to the correct orbital position. How do we do this? Well, we follow an “asteroid belt” found between Comets.
Comets generally move in a very narrow orbit. This narrow orbit will gradually bring these objects into closer proximity to the planet and our own. The objects will also move off to the side as the comet loses mass and heats up. These small perturbations in the comet’s orbit can be used by our spacecraft to use this perturbation to re-orient itself for a safe landing inside our solar system or perhaps to re-orbit.
The question of “What is Orbit?” is truly important in our everyday lives. If we learn how to use our outer space objects to keep from being torn apart by a space debris and our inner space objects to get ourselves into a stable orbit around the planet, then we can use this knowledge to make a lot of great discoveries. Who knows what discoveries we might make?
